Planting potatoes

How wonderful it is to get our hands back in the soil again, connecting with the Earth’s amazing soil. The soil ecology unbelievably diverse.  Today we planted potatoes with joy. There are a lot of different to plant potatoes, but for us this year we have decided to try seeding directly into deep holes topped with straw mulch. The best trick I can suggest is to plant them whole. Crops from any living thing come from good genes — when you put a bigger potato seed in the ground you’re going to get a bigger, better crop (if well cared for).

Peas went in the ground earlier this week as well. We are ecstatic about peas this year, we found a lot of interesting heirloom varieties and are excited to try out some dry pea varieties for soup peas. We’re also trying fava beans, lima beans that can mature in this climate, and ‘tongue of fire’ green beans.
