What is a CSA?

The CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a 21 week partnership between shareholders and Willow Brook Farm/Back to Eden Garden Project. CSA members commit to a season of produce from the farm by purchasing a share before the harvest season begins. This early income is vital for the farm to start production each year. Once the season begins in early June, you’ll receive a variety of the fresh vegetables harvested each week! CSA members share the rewards of a great season – and the risks that can come with extreme weather and pests.

What to expect:

We will have 8-12 items in your weekly share. We grow over 30 different kinds of vegetables through the season with the intention of diversifying the foods you receive each week.

Are you organic?

We are not yet certified organic, but are in the process of becoming certified. In the meantime, we grow using entirely organic methods and use no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Our soil is fertilized with organic compost, lime, rock dust and bone char. We keep insects in check by hand-picking and protecting plants with row covers and netting.

By supporting organic agriculture you are doing your part to combat climate change. Really? Yes!! Numerous studies have demonstrated that a switch from conventional to organic farming methods can decrease the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nitrogen heavy chemical fertilizers used in conventional agriculture are a serious contributor of N2O (nitrous oxide) production- a major greenhouse gas. In addition, chemical fertilizers damage the mycorrhizal and microbial interactions that store carbon in the soil. A 30 year study by the Rodale Institute proved the soil’s ability to reverse climate change , but only when the health of the soil is maintained through organic regenerative agriculture. Farming is a crazy business, all that work and investment has to happen months and months before the first seed even hits the ground, then it’s months and months more before that seed becomes a marketable crop. But it will!

Spread the word. Tell your friends. Register now. We need you. The soil needs you. The earth needs you.

A word on CSA Share Pricing

The share price reflects the real costs of growing high quality vegetables. By eliminating the costs of packaging, shipping and marketing, the farmer receives a fair share of the profit. The average produce at the supermarket travels 1500 miles. The Earth really can’t afford the huge mono-industrial food system we have created anymore. So by supporting local farmers you are contributing to a more prosperous local economy, doing your part in lessening your carbon footprint and getting better, more delicious nutrient dense food! We believe this adds up to a better value for your food dollar.
