Ever since the Willow Brook Farm board meeting on the 1st of the month we have been really contemplating which enterprises we feel we want to put the most focus and energy into, that will bring the most reward back for us.
For a while we were planning to raise some meat birds, but upon reflection, ethically we don’t feel like raising meat birds is something that we feel proud in anymore. Market gardening is something that we really enjoy but the market where we are is currently flooded with organic vegetables. Considering that our farmers market is new this year, we see a lot of vegetables not being sold at the end of the market as well. Which definitely doesn’t make us feel good about putting tons of work and energy in the garden, and then to not be supported financially from our community would be a real downer.
Luckily, we are foreseeing all these circumstances and realizing that what we have going for us with the goat dairy already is really sought after and valuable. We are the only vendor supplying dairy products at our market which is a real bonus. There are three vegetable vendors and one just recently dropped out for good because of the lack of sales. We feel really confident to started putting more effort into improving our products and ways we market to reach more people to our products.
